A customer was accused of not buying the fruit after touching it and even throwing it on the ground. In the end, the police have to step in as a result of the dispute between the fruit stall seller and the customer.

According to Zaobao, the dispute took place at 9.30pm on Monday (6 January) in one of the stalls beside the Chinese New Year bazaar in Chinatown’s People’s Park Centre.

A reader, known as Mr Wu, who happened to witness the incident told the Shin Min Daily News reporter that he heard a loud noisy quarrel coming from the booth at that time, so he went to check.

Mr Wu said: “I heard the female stall owner telling a pair of male and female customers that they need to pay for the fruits after touching it. But the other party refused, which made her very angry. The other party then threaten to get physical, so the female stall owner quickly notified her husband to come to the scene.”

He added that after the female stall owner’s husband arrived, he angrily picked up the broom and waved it at the customer, shouting: “Hit lor, hit lor, I got no money meh?”

Mr Wu told the report that about 20 bystanders were watching and tried to persuade the customer to buy the fruit, but the other party insisted on not buying.

He revealed: “After I saw that both parties became more and more violent, I decided to call the police.”

When a reporter from Shin Min Daily News visited the place on Tuesday night (10 January), a stall owner who did not want to be named said that because he was busy closing the stall at the time, he did not pay special attention to this matter.

The stall owner said: “As far as I know, the customer touched the peaches at the time. It is okay if he didn’t want to buy it, but he threw the peaches on the ground, which angered the fruit stall owner.”

He said that the two sides argued for about 30 minutes, and then the police arrived at the scene and left after mediation.
