A man in his sixties was suspected of having a heart attack while driving.

According to Zaobao, the van he was driving went out of control and crashed into a letterbox and a lamp post before it stopped.

The driver was found unconscious and trapped in the driver’s seat. He was later pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital.

The accident took place yesterday (8 March) at about 9.53am along Yishun Avenue 3.

In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, an eyewitness who only wanted to be known as Mr Fu described that he was at home at the time of the accident. He looked out of the window after hearing a loud noise and witnessed the accident.

“The van hit one of the lamp posts along the road, and it also crashed into a letterbox next to it.”

The 60-year-old self-employed said he quickly went downstairs with his son to investigate. The driver was in the driver’s seat. He was motionless, his tongue was protruded, and he was unconscious. They called the police immediately.

“We didn’t dare to touch him for fear of hurting him, so we waited for the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel to arrive. It took about 10 minutes for help to arrive. The paramedics worked to resuscitate him on the spot before taking him to the hospital,” the man continued.

According to the man, he thinks that the driver had suffered from a heart attack while driving. It also could be because the van lost control and therefore hitting the lamp post as there was a 20-meter long tire mark left behind by the van.
