ICYMI: After MP Seah Kian Peng says clean wages insults teachers, AVA decides to charge staff for parking.

Seah Kian Peng asks government to rethink economic reasoning in policy-making

In a Parliament speech, MP Seah Kian Peng saluted teachers in Singapore for going above and beyond what they are paid, to motivate and help students without thinking about reimbursement.

Yet teachers have to pay parking because ‘clean wages’

MP Seah Kian Peng said this reason insults teachers, as it implies they enjoyed hidden perks and do all those things for students in return for free parking.

He said cannot always use economics to reason, also must have moral reasoning, i.e. know between right and wrong, not just $ and ¢.

But economic reasoning is empty without a moral foundation; such foundations cannot and do not exist without a conversation about values. Not just what is cheap, but what is right, not just about generating income, but about giving meaning. For too long, we have made decisions based more on an economic compass, as if the use of one dollar has the moral equivalence of the loss of another.

Yesterday, AVA announced to its staff that they also have to pay for parking, e.g. car drivers will pay up to $110 a month starting 1 July 2018.

So AVA staff also have ‘unclean wages’ like teachers too?

While the jobs of AVA staff may not tug at heartstrings in the way our teachers do, here are some things they do that look after us:

Fighting illegal trade

Food safety

Pet health warnings

Food sustainability

But government cannot U-turn right?

Probably not, coz otherwise all the other civil servants who kena have to pay for parking will throw table and chair.
