Singaporeans won’t get new Filipino workers for a while

If you’re hoping to employ new domestic workers from the Philippines, you won’t be able to do so for at least three weeks. The Philippine government suspended the processing of exit permits for Filipino workers wanting to work overseas.

The Department of Labour and Employment of the Philippines said the suspension will last from 13 November to 1 Dec while “persistent reports of illegal recruitment activities” are investigated. The suspension is subject to extension if needed.

The only overseas employment certificates that will be processed are those for workers hired by international organisations and diplomats, government hires and those returning from home leave.

Employment agencies here have been caught unaware by the suspension. Employers have also had to make last minute arrangements for their homes.

About 180,000 Filipino workers work in Singapore. Besides domestic workers, the suspension also affects other workers like information technology professionals and nurses.
