Don’t use cheap batteries for e-scooters…fire hazard

Share

In the past few weeks, three fires involving e-scooters were reported. Two of the cases happened just this week.

Some experts believe this may be caused by cheap batteries sold online on sites like Carousell and Taobao.

Batteries from more reputable manufacturers like LG and Samsung cost around $200 and $300. But cheaper batteries only cost about $60.

According to a e-scooter retailer, branded batteries have better quality and can handle heat and stress better.

Overcharging is another reason for fires, according to the retailer.

Batteries with protection circuitry should stop charging when it is full. But batteries of poor quality or faulty batteries may not stop charging, which can cause overheating.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force has posted on Facebook a reminder for e-scooter users to not leave their devices charging overnight.
