A worker at a stall in Yishun pasar malam was caught on video dipping his finger into batter to taste it.
Members of the public raised concerns about hygiene. The stall owner said the worker has since been dismissed.
The incident happened on August 5 at the pasar malam beside Block 456, Yishun Street 41.
According to a video circulating online, a male worker was preparing batter without wearing gloves. He was seen dipping his finger into a plastic container of batter several times and then putting it into his mouth to taste it.
The member of the public who filmed the video felt it was unhygienic and could pose food safety risks.
The post sparked heated discussion, with most people criticising the man’s behaviour and calling it disgusting. Some also commented that concerns over food hygiene were the reason they rarely visited street night markets.
Reporters from Shin Min Daily News visited the pasar malam, which has about 10 stalls. The stall in question sells takoyaki, fried potato chips and burgers. Four to five workers were manning the stall, but the man seen in the video was not present.
The stall owner, Mr Chen, 45, said the worker was a part-timer who had only been on the job for two days. He has since been dismissed.
Mr Chen shared that he happened to be at the stall to supervise when he witnessed the incident while waiting at a traffic light.
He immediately confronted the worker, who only said: “Sorry, I forgot.” Mr Chen said hygiene is extremely important, so he decided to fire him on the spot.
