With the General Election 2025 approaching, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has unveiled its lineup for the newly formed West Coast–Jurong West Group Representation Constituency (GRC). This new GRC was established following recent electoral boundary changes that merged parts of Jurong West into the former West Coast GRC.
Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development, will anchor the PAP team in this constituency. He is joined by incumbent MPs Ang Wei Neng and Shawn Huang, both bringing parliamentary experience to the team.
The team also includes two new candidates: Dr. Hamid Razak, an orthopaedic surgeon with 17 years of volunteer service in Taman Jurong, and Cassandra Lee, a lawyer passionate about supporting young families and youth development.
One name that had sparked speculation earlier was Natasha Choy, a trade unionist and Director of NTUC’s Youth Development, who was previously seen on the ground with Desmond Lee at several events. Many had wondered if she would be fielded as part of the team, but she is not among the candidates announced.
Meanwhile, Patrick Tay, the incumbent MP for Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) and Assistant Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), will be contesting the seat again for the PAP.
Pioneer SMC remains unchanged in the latest electoral boundary review and has 25,166 registered voters as of 2025. In the 2020 General Election, Tay secured 62% of the vote in a three-cornered contest against the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) and an independent candidate.
Earlier, the PSP confirmed its intention to contest Pioneer SMC again in GE2025, although it has not yet announced its candidate. This sets the stage for a potentially competitive race, possibly involving multiple parties.
With fresh faces, seasoned MPs, and the return of familiar challengers, West Coast–Jurong West GRC is shaping up to be one of the hot seats to watch in GE2025.
