The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has confirmed that it will be contesting Marymount Single Member Constituency (SMC) again in the upcoming General Election 2025.
This was shared by PSP secretary-general Leong Mun Wai during a walkabout at Marymount on 12 April 2025. While he didn’t reveal who the candidate will be, he confirmed that the party will return to the SMC it previously contested in 2020.
In the last election, PSP fielded Dr Ang Yong Guan, a psychiatrist, in Marymount. He faced off against the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Gan Siow Huang, who won with 55.04% of the vote. Dr Ang secured 44.96%, making it a relatively close contest.
However, Dr Ang will not be returning this time. In February 2025, he was suspended from medical practice for three years after being found guilty of professional misconduct. A disciplinary tribunal concluded that Dr Ang had overprescribed medication to a patient, who later died from multi-organ failure due to mixed drug intoxication. He has since closed his clinic and announced that he will not be standing in GE2025.
As for who will be contesting Marymount under the PSP banner this time, Leong said the party is still finalising its slate of candidates and will announce more details in due course.
When asked if former PSP central executive committee member Jeffrey Khoo, who was seen at the walkabout will likely be PSP’s candidate in Marymount, Mr Leong said the party is still looking at its best line-up.
Besides Marymount, PSP has also confirmed plans to contest in Kebun Baru and Pioneer SMCs — both of which the party also contested in GE2020. In all three wards, PSP had respectable showings, and the party appears confident about building on those results in the next election.
With GE2025 expected to be called soon, PSP becomes one of the first opposition parties to publicly declare its contesting plans. Residents in Marymount, Kebun Baru, and Pioneer can expect more walkabouts, house visits, and campaign activity as the election draws near.
