Ng Chee Meng: “I hope to return to Parliament on my own merits”

Ng Chee Meng Jalan Kayu SMC

NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng is stepping into the political ring once again.

Ng Chee Meng, who is currently the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), has expressed intention to contest in Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency (SMC), a move that caught the attention of many political observers and residents alike.

In a recent interview with Chinese media as part of the “Answer 2025” election interview series, Ng said he made the decision to run in a Single Member Constituency because he wanted to “rely on his own strength to return to Parliament.”

Ng is no stranger to leadership roles. As NTUC Secretary-General, he’s spent the past few years working closely with workers, employers, and unions to strengthen support for career resilience, skills upgrading, and fair workplace practices.

But this time, he’s stepping up on his own, no party team. Just him and the residents of Jalan Kayu SMC.

He acknowledged that contesting alone will be challenging, but said this approach aligns with his belief in courage and humility as key traits of a public servant.

Winning over young voters

When asked how he plans to appeal to younger voters, many of whom are first-time voters, Ng said he will do his best to understand the voices of the younger people, their visions, and their challenges.

He also added that it is important to hear their suggestions or ideas. He hopes to work together with them to create the future.

He also shared that through NTUC, he has worked on various initiatives to help younger workers navigate the challenges of job transitions, upskilling, and career uncertainty in a rapidly evolving economy.

What’s next?

While the PAP has yet to formally unveil its slate of candidates for Jalan Kayu SMC, Ng’s early presence on the ground, including walkabouts and house visits, suggests that preparations are already well underway.

As for Ng himself, he’s making it clear: he doesn’t want to return to Parliament by riding on coattails. He wants to earn it, the hard way. Kudos to him for that!
