It has only been two weeks since 2026 started, and lao niang really cannot believe the first Parliament sitting already got so much drama liao.
In case you haven’t been following the news, on January 14, Parliament voted in support of a motion stating that Workers’ Party (WP) chief Pritam Singh was unsuitable to continue as Leader of the Opposition (LO). This motion came after he was found guilty of lying to the Committee of Privileges in the Raeesah Khan case.
Following that, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed Pritam Singh as LO and asked the WP to nominate another MP to fill the position.
Now that everything already happened, lao niang wants to explain why this decision was the right move, because until today, a lot of people are still mixing things up, or they just simply refuse to accept the reality. Delulu is the Solulu?
But before anything else, remember these two facts:
- Pritam Singh was found guilty of lying to the Committee of Privileges by the High Court
- Pritam Singh accepts the High Court’s judgment “fully and without reservation”
What the motion in Parliament was actually about
The motion was NOT about re-arguing whether Pritam Singh lied or not.
The case already closed liao. Bungkus! The court has decided. Pritam Singh himself said he accepts the judgment fully and without reservation.
So Parliament was NOT saying, “Let’s re-litigate the case again.”
What Parliament was debating is much simpler:
If someone has been found guilty of lying, is he still suitable to continue holding the title of Leader of the Opposition?
That’s it. That’s the question.
Let lao niang put this into perspective:
Lao niang caught my Ah Lao (husband) cheating. Not rumours, not gossip, properly found out, evidence all there. Heck, lao niang even caught him kissing, laji-laji (French kiss) and making out with the 小三 (mistress) through the car’s dashcam.
So lao niang decides, “Lao niang wants a divorce!”
Ah Lao says, “Okay, I accept the divorce. But I disagree that I was being unfaithful to you. She and I only exchanged body fluids and touch touch each other. I still come home to you every day.”
So when he says he accepts the divorce but disagrees with the cheating, and therefore he was not being unfaithful, what he is actually saying is this:
“I accept that the marriage is over. But I don’t accept the reason why it is over.”
JIT PA HOR YI SI! Give him one tight slap and send him to hellhole.
Which means this 渣男 (scumbag) is not really accepting the judgment at all. He is just accepting the reality because there is no way to avoid it anymore.
In short, he has absolutely no remorse, and he doesn’t think what he did was wrong.
Why this matters for the Leader of the Opposition role
Now, let’s bring this back to Parliament.
In Pritam Singh’s case, he accepts the outcome of the court case.
That outcome is that he was found guilty of lying.
So Parliament is not questioning the court’s decision. Parliament is asking:
what does this conviction mean for someone holding a top leadership role?
The Leader of the Opposition is not an ordinary title that you can anyhow give to ah mao ah gou. It comes with authority, resources and responsibility. This role exists so the opposition can hold the Government accountable with credibility.
If the person holding that role is a convicted liar, it is entirely reasonable — and necessary — for Parliament to say this role can no longer function properly under him.
This is not personal. This is about standards.
Why PM Lawrence Wong’s decision matters
After Parliament expressed regret at Pritam Singh’s conduct and stated that he was unsuitable to continue as LO, the Prime Minister acted on it and removed him from the role.
This is important.
Because it shows this was not political theatre or some emotional knee-jerk reaction.
It was a proper process:
- The court determines guilt
- Parliament debates suitability
- Prime Minister makes the final call
Clean. Clear. Accountable.
Ask yourself honestly lah: Do you want your MP — especially a top parliamentary leader — to be someone who repeatedly tells lies?
Lao niang confirm don’t want lor. Lao niang wants my MP to be someone honest and reliable.
There is no need to drag in other people or other cases to downplay this issue. No need to deflect and create confusion. We 就事论事. Stick to the facts and focus on this issue.
If the Leader of the Opposition cannot be held to a higher bar after a conviction for lying, then honestly, what is that bar for? Monkey Bar ah?
Singaporeans deserve leaders whose words carry weight. Opposition supporters also deserve a leader they don’t have to keep explaining away. That is why removing Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition was the right move.
For now, let’s keep our eyes peeled and see who the Workers’ Party will nominate next bah.
