Labour Chief and Jalan Kayu Member of Parliament Ng Chee Meng is once again showing that he is committed to staying close to people on the ground and hearing their concerns.

In a recent Facebook post, Ng invited residents to join him for a kopi session where caregivers can openly share their struggles and discuss the kind of support they need.

He emphasised that such ground interactions are important for him to better understand the day-to-day challenges families face.

Not too long ago, he also met up with platform workers to hear their struggles and concerns over the rise of illegal platform workers.

Ng has been engaging workers to understand their concerns and struggles since 2018 when he became the Secretary General for NTUC.

During the National Trades Union Congress’s (NTUC) year-long engagement, the Every Worker Matters Conversations campaign in 2023, NTUC has engaged more than 40,000 workers from all walks of life, listening to their concerns and aspirations. The feedback gathered from those sessions helped shape policies and initiatives that continue to support workers today.

Through the NTUC Healthcare Academy, NTUC also offers accessible training for caregivers, including tailored courses for domestic helpers. In addition, the Labour Movement works closely with partners like the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) to improve access to resources, respite care, and learning platforms. And through the Every Worker Matters movement, NTUC continues to advocate for stronger recognition and support for caregivers across Singapore.

For Ng, these kopi sessions are more than just casual chats. They help guide both his work in Parliament as Jalan Kayu MP and the Labour Movement’s efforts in championing workers’ interests, ensuring that policies and support schemes stay relevant to the changing needs of Singaporeans.

By inviting residents to lim kopi and share their views, Ng reinforces his role not just as a leader, but also as someone who genuinely cares about what workers and residents go through.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on caregiving. Many of us are caring for ageing parents, young children, or loved ones with special needs. These responsibilities can bring both joy and challenges.
Let’s have a candid chat on what can we do together to support caregivers in our community.
See you!
P.S. More of such sessions are in the works, so don’t worry if you miss this one.
