Indranee Rajah to succeed Teo Chee Hean in Pasir Ris-Changi, carrying on his legacy

From tank ride in 2008 to torch bearer in 2025 Indranee Rajah to take over Pasir Ris-Changi from Teo Chee Hean in GE2025

In 2008, she was on a tank with him. In 2025, she’s taking over his constituency.

Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean will not be contesting in GE2025. In his place, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah has been introduced as a candidate for Pasir Ris-Changi GRC.

In an Instagram post on Apr. 23, Indranee shared a throwback photo of herself and SM Teo from 2008, both in military fatigues on top of a tank. At the time, Teo was Singapore’s Defence Minister, and Indranee was the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) Chairperson.

Fast forward to 2025, and the baton is being officially passed.

Indranee recalled attending her first PAP tea session in 2001, hosted by Teo, never imagining that she would one day be fielded to take over his constituency. She described the moment as one filled with “deep responsibility” and said she’s taking it seriously.

Teo, who has been a familiar face in the area for years, introduced Indranee to Pasir Ris residents over the weekend. Many of them expressed their appreciation for his contributions and long-standing presence in the community.

“The close bond he has built up with them over the years was evident,” Indranee said.

She added that the Pasir Ris-Changi team is committed to continuing the good work that Teo has done — if given the mandate in GE2025.

Receiving the baton

My very first tea session with the PAP was in 2001 and it was hosted by the then Education Minister RADM Teo Chee Hean.

I never imagined at that time that I would one day be tasked to stand as a candidate for Pasir Ris in his stead.

Am deeply conscious of the responsibility and it’s something I take very seriously.

As he introduced me to Pasir Ris residents yesterday, the close bond he has built up with them over the years was evident. Many spoke of how they and their families had grown up with him, how the town has developed and improved under his leadership, and thanked him for all he had done for them.

It was clear that he holds a very special place in their hearts.

The Pasir Ris-Changi team will certainly do our best for the residents and build on SM’s good work if we are given the mandate to do so.

Here’s a blast from the past from when SM Teo was Defence Minister and I was GPC Chairperson back in 2008 – that’s us up on the tank!
