One British women’s rights activist even tweeted that “Don’t normalize molestation of kids – don’t care how revered the Dalai Lama is I’m not OK with a child sucking a grown man/woman/anyone’s tongue.”
It happened in February at the temple where the Dalai Lama lives, when the young boy asked for a hug. The Dalai Lama said “first here” and pointed to his cheek. Then he pointed to his own lips and asked for another kiss. But here’s the shocker, the 87-year-old priest then said “and suck my tongue” in the clip, putting his forehead closer to the young boy’s.
Apparently he did it as a playful gesture, but it’s caused a lot of hurt and upset. The Dalai Lama says sorry to the boy and his family, and his team says he just likes to play around with people, even in public. But some people are saying you can’t just normalize this kind of thing – it’s not okay for anyone to be asking children to do things like that.
The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since fleeing Tibet in 1959, following an uprising against Chinese rule there.
In Tibet, sticking out the tongue is a traditional greeting that goes back to the 9th century and is seen as a sign of respect or agreement. But to ask someone else to suck your tongue? A bit too much right.
And did you know the Dalai Lama also has ties to a self-help cult called NXIVM, which has a history of sexual abuse. Leader Keith Raniere was sentenced to prison after investigation found that multiple women, including one teenage girl, was coerced into having sex with him. The girls also had Raniere’s initials branded on their pelvises.
