Who’s like me, already looking forward to round 2 of nonstop hotpot, ong lai tarts, bak kwa, poker and mahjong this CNY weekend? The CNY festive period is a restful and shiok one for many of us. 4 days long weekend last week leh! But then hor, not everyone is celebrating and enjoying a good time with their families… Because of work commitments or the expensive air tickets, many of our migrant workers are stuck here, far far away from their family.
While we were all springcleaning and prepping for our own celebrations, a group of kindhearted people from the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) were busy preparing for a mega celebration for the workers in the dormitories. Set up in 2009, the MWC is an initiative of the NTUC and the SNEF, to promote the overall well-being of migrant workers. On the second day of CNY last week, thousands of migrant workers from many countries came together to celebrate CNY.
Lion dance performances, face changing performances and even vouchers were given away at the event.
Migrant Workers’ Centre Chairman Mr Yeo Guat Kwang was also present to join in the celebrations, and he gave out oranges to the migrant workers! There, he shared on the welfare of migrant workers with scams and workplace safety issues on the rise.
Did you know that there are 2000+ MWC Ambassadors as volunteers to feedback issues on the ground that their fellow workers are facing? Things like workplace discrimination, unfair treatment, safety, and even guidance on how they can connect with their families. Very good initiative right!
Say real, our migrant workers helped Singapore to continue developing as a good home and a good place to do business and play in. They have contributed a lot in building our nation. Good job, Migrant Workers’ Centre for bringing some cheer to them this festive season! Every worker matters. If you meet any of our migrant workers on the road this festive season, mai kiam siap (don’t stingy), give them a small small angpow, a drink or some oranges. I’m sure they will appreciate!
You know Chinese say, 施比受更有福 (more blessed to give than to receive) right!
