Migrant Workers’ Centre Brings Joy to Many Migrant Workers!

Share

Just over the weekend, to celebrate International Migrants Day (IMD), the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) brought joy, laughter and many fun activities for many workers at the MWC Recreation Club (MWC RC)! In case you never follow, IMD falls on 18 December every year. For the first time since the pandemic, MWC’s IMD celebrations returned on a full scale! Got sports events, a concert with song and dance performances, goodie bags, and an award ceremony to thank these workers who have been helping to engage and support their fellow workers and friends!

NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Desmond Tan also joined in the fun in a friendly sports match with some of them!

“Migrant workers who come to Singapore to earn a better living for themselves and loved ones back home are often vulnerable to their new environment due to language or cultural barriers.” NTUC Deputy Secretary-General Desmond Tan

He urged companies that employ migrant workers to work with NTUC and MWC to strengthen efforts in bettering their welfare, so they can continue to have a safe environment to work and live in, earn their wages and support their loved ones back home.

The pandemic has brought out a spirit of volunteerism among these workers – silver lining! Many of them actually stepped forward to help other migrant workers in need and initiated ground-up efforts to support their community!

On 26 December at the Tuas View Dormitory, the MWC will organise another concert for them to celebrate the year-end festive season. Both concerts will also be livestreamed on MWC’s Facebook page. The celebratory activities across the two days are expected to engage a total of 18,000 workers on site, and 100,000 online viewers for the concerts.

Our migrant workers have worked hard to keep Singapore going during this pandemic, the past few years have been really tough for them… Good that organisations like the MWC are thinking of them!
