Share

Yesterday, NTUC labour chief Ng Chee Meng sit in front of the media to share how NTUC, as a workers’ union, intends to help the workers fight inflation and cope with the rising cost of living.

Because you know one lah, recently got a lot of things increase liao – taxi fare increase, electricity tariff increase, even Swiss Rolls also want to increase price liao. Lao niang’s age and wrinkles also starting to increase. KNS leh really.

So as a National Trades Union Congress that strives to help workers and uplift their lives, he has to come out and say how the NTUC is planning to help workers deal with the rising cost of living what, tio bo?

Unless your England very powderful and you got a lot of time to read, if not, here’s what he said broken down into super layman term:

1. You Huat I Huat so everybody HUAT

The most straightforward way to deal with this rising cost of living is to earn more money lah. So hor, Ng said that NTUC will help workers work towards that.

First, NTUC will step in to help companies and tow kays huat first in their business. When companies and tow kays identify the ways to huat liao, NTUC also will ensure that the workers are well-trained with skills to keep up as the companies huat all the way.

When companies and tow kays identify the ways to huat liao, NTUC also will ensure that the workers are well-trained with skills through the company training committees (CTCs) to keep up as companies huat.

When companies Huat, the workers also Huat. When everyone huat, the cost of living will be no kick liao. Can see the link bo?

2. Shop at NTUC FairPrice if you want to “stretch your dollar”

Remember that NTUC FairPrice announced that they will be extending its discount schemes for seniors and low-income families for another year at all its supermarkets until 31 December 2022?

So yah lah, no need paiseh one! With the Pioneer Generation (PG) Proxy initiative in place hor, you can just take your ah gong ah ma or your laopeh laobu pioneer generation card and flash it at the cashier and pretend maciam you helping them to buy things to enjoy their special discounts!

If you go out and compare prices and see Sheng Siong or Giant sell cheaper than NTUC FairPrice, then lagi better right? Go there and buy lah!

In a way, NTUC FairPrice is also helping you to “stretch your dollar” leh. You get it a not?

3. NTUC will continue to look after and protect workers in different ways

For the low-wage workers:
Fasterly widen the implementation of the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) to more sectors.

For the professionals, managers, and executives (PMEs):
NTUC will continue to work with its partners, like Gahmen and TAFEP, to zoom into key areas to make sure that there are fair workplace opportunities for local PMEs.

They will also strengthen the Employment Pass framework and process in favour of local PMEs and support local PMEs who are involuntarily unemployed.

Labour MP Patrick Tay ask Gahmen to give unemployment support & benefits to PMEs, AGAIN

For the Self-Employed:
For self-employed persons, NTUC will continue to contribute as members of the Advisory Committee on Platform Workers and look at improving working terms and conditions and medical and injury coverage.

For the older workers:
NTUC will look at the next steps in raising of the statutory retirement and re-employment ages to 65 and 70 to protect older workers who want to continue working longer and the increase to the CPF contributions.

For the younger workers aka fresh graduates
NTUC will continue to partner with institutes of higher learning to ensure real placement opportunities for fresh entrants to the workforce through programmes such as internships.

For the working mothers:
NTUC’s training and placement ecosystem will help ease women looking to return to work through targeted assistance and dedicated job matching. NTUC is also working closely with companies to redesign jobs and adopt family-friendly practices.

So ah, the long story short is hor, NTUC wants to help workers deal with the cost of living by helping them to earn more money. And the way to achieve this is to help ensure that the workers got good jobs that allow them to earn a good wage.

Now you can use the time you just saved from reading The Straits Times’ long-ass article to go and think of what number to buy for this Friday’s $16 million TOTO. This one win liao really no need to worry about simi rising cost of living! 🤑
