66-year-old man sentenced to 6 weeks of jail for confining a lady and setting corridor on fire

A 66-year-old man was accused of illegally confining a woman. After being convicted, he was sentenced to psychiatric treatment for two years. During this period, the man was reported to the police after his neighbour found signs of burns in the corridor.

The man faces one count of mischief and one count for wrongful confinement. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to six weeks in prison yesterday (September 21).

According to Zaobao, at about 12.17am in 2019, the accused had used a lock to lock the door of a flat at Block 305 Shunfu Road, causing the woman in the house to be unable to leave the flat, thus committing the crime of wrongful confinement. The court did not disclose the relationship between the accused and the woman.

The court revealed that the accused is suffering from mental illness, and hence he was sentenced to two years of psychiatric treatment for the crime of illegally confining others. Unfortunately, before he could finish the treatment, and he was yet again accused of breaking the law in March this year.

This time, the accused had allegedly set fire to the corridor outside a unit located on the fourth floor of a flat on Shunfu Road at about 1.37pm. The accused placed a few sheets of paper in the corridor to which he set fire on and left.

The owner of the unit was taking a nap when the accused was committing the crime. He was later notified by his relative who came home to the signs of burns in the corridor.

The owner later reported the incident to the police after checking the CCTV footage, which captured the accused clearly.
