A man and a woman were arrested yesterday (7 September 2017) under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for terror-related activities.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), 34 year old Imran Kassim was issued a Detention Order in July for intending to undertake armed violence overseas, while 23 year old Shakirah Begam Abdul Wahab was given a Restriction Order for initiating and maintaining contact with the foreign terrorist fighters.

MHA said that Imran was a managing director of a logistics company and was radicalised by propaganda from the Islamic State.

He actually travelled to Syria in February 2014 to oversee the delivery of humanitarian aid to a refugee camp, which had been arranged by the company he worked for. While he was there, he tried to slip away from his group at the refugee camp but was not successful.

He also pledged allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghadi in July 2014.

Imran also had been active in getting support for IS online, using several fake social media accounts to post pro IS materials. He also tried to influence his friends with radical views.

MHA said that his radical views “attracted the attention of people close to him, who then reported him to the authorities”.

On top of that, Imran also said he was prepared to attack SAF personnel in global anti-IS coalition or hold them hostage.

The other suspect Shakirah came across social media details of a foreign terrorist fighter and was in contact with him and other foreign fighters as well said the MHA.

The administrative assistant said she did so because she enjoyed their attention.

Although she stopped contacting them in early 2016, she continued to keep herself updated of the developments in Syria.

MHA said that she “demonstrated a propensity to engage in risky behaviour” that made her easy to influence and recruit by terrorists. As a result, MHA put her on a restriction order which limits her activities and movements.

In June, three Singaporeans were also arrested for terror-related activities.

Two ISA detainees were also released last month and placed on restriction orders according to MHA.
