A man who discovered his girlfriend collapsed and was unresponsive in her home but left without calling the police was sentenced to jail on Monday (Nov 17) after admitting to several charges.
Shin Min Daily News previously reported that on April 27 last year, around 11 am, a 33-year-old woman was found dead inside a unit at Block 43 of Riverfront Residences in Hougang Avenue 7, leading to police investigations.
To protect her children, who are under 18, her name and identity cannot be disclosed.
The accused is her boyfriend, 34-year-old Hong Kaiqi (transliteration). He faced five charges, including failing to report the death, driving while his licence was revoked, and giving a false statement to the police.
He pleaded guilty to four charges, with the remaining one to be considered during sentencing.
Court documents revealed that the victim was a single mother with two children. The couple had an on-and-off relationship, and Hong would sometimes stay overnight at her home. Hence, he had a key card to access her unit.
According to the case, on April 23 last year, Hong tried repeatedly to contact the victim but received no reply. He then decided to go directly to her home. He arrived at about 4:10 pm and found the place in a mess. The bedroom door was open, but the room was dark, with the curtains drawn and no lights turned on.
Attempted CPR
Hong found the victim lying motionless on the bed, covered with a blanket up to her neck. She did not respond when he called out to her.
He picked up an inhaler beside her and sprayed it once into her mouth. He heard what sounded like an exhalation and noticed some white residue around her lips.
He then tried performing CPR, but she did not react. Seeing that her eyes were slightly open, he gently closed them, took his belongings, and left the unit.
After placing his things in his car, he returned to the doorstep, sealed the key card in an envelope, left it on the shoe rack outside the unit, and drove away from the condominium.
