A tragic accident happened at Teck Whye Lane when a car suddenly mounted the pavement and hit two 83-year-old women, reported Shin Min Daily News. One woman died, while the other was injured. The 29-year-old male driver was later arrested, and several e-cigarettes were found in his car.

The incident took place on Saturday (Nov 8) around 2:50 pm, near Block 25 Teck Whye Lane. The deceased was identified as 83-year-old Chen Jinbao (transliteration). Her friend, who is also 83, was taken to the hospital with injuries.

According to a staff member from a nearby coffee shop, Mr Wang Wenqing (transliteration), 40, both women were familiar faces at his roasted meat stall. “They were regulars. I believe they had just finished their meal and were walking home when the accident happened,” he said.

“I heard a loud bang while I was working. When I looked over, I saw two elderly women lying on the ground. One had her eyes closed and wasn’t moving at all. A familiar customer ran to inform her domestic helper. The other woman’s hand looked broken, and she had injuries on her limbs.”

Based on what the injured woman told him, the two of them were about to cross the road when they noticed the car speeding toward them. They stepped back to avoid it, but the car suddenly veered onto the pavement and only stopped after hitting a tree.

Mr Wang said the driver looked dazed and sat inside the car without moving, repeatedly insisting that he “didn’t hit anyone.”

“We told him, ‘Two people are lying on the ground, and you still say you didn’t hit anyone!’ Luckily, there was a tree. If not, both women might have been dragged under the car,” he said. “Nobody dared to move them, so we waited for the ambulance. Paramedics arrived about 15 minutes later and immediately performed CPR on one of the women. Police later handcuffed the man and took him away.”

Police confirmed that the accident involved a car and two pedestrians. One 83-year-old woman was conscious when taken to the hospital, while the other was unconscious and later died in the hospital.
