Hawker returns $450 after customer mistakenly overpays for $4.50 carrot cake, reminds diners to check before transferring

A customer who bought $4.50 worth of carrot cake accidentally transferred $450 to a hawker at Serangoon Garden Food Centre. Thankfully, the stall owner realised it in time and returned the money to the customer in time.

The incident took place around 10am last Thursday (October 30) at the Serangoon Garden Carrot Cake & Wanton Noodle Stall.

Stall owner Mr Koh, 54, told Shin Min Daily News that the man had ordered a plate of carrot cake and paid via mobile transfer.

“While transferring, he suddenly exclaimed and told me he had accidentally sent $450. There were many customers at that time, so I quickly transferred the $450 back to him, and he then resent $4.50 to us,” said Koh.

Koh shared that this was not the first time such an incident had happened.

“Previously, a customer ordered $16 worth of food but accidentally transferred $1,600 instead. Luckily, he realised it immediately, and we returned the money right away.”

He added that while mobile payments are convenient, users must still double-check the amount before confirming the transaction.

“Some banking apps work differently. If you’re not careful, you could end up transferring 10 or even 100 times more than intended.”

Koh said he always looks out for such mistakes because everyone’s money is hard-earned.

“Whenever there’s a transaction, the phone will receive a notification. Of course, we also check the amount, and if we see something wrong, we’ll quickly inform the customer. After all, this is everyone’s hard-earned money,” he added.
