A 73-year-old man landed himself in jail for 11 weeks after he attacked a bus driver and smashed a window with the emergency hammer, all because he missed his stop while drunk.
The incident happened on June 30 last year at about 11:39 pm on board bus service 102.
The man, named Raman (transliteration), faced two charges, one for voluntarily causing hurt and another for mischief.
Court documents showed that before boarding the bus, Raman had already finished three bottles of beer and one bottle of stout.
At about 11:30 pm, the bus stopped near Piccadilly Circus. Raman then walked to the driver and said he wanted to get off at Fernvale Lane in Sengkang. The driver told him he had already missed the stop. Raman got angry, claiming he had earlier asked the driver to remind him when the bus reached Fernvale Lane. The driver said he could not remember such a request, and the two started arguing.
When the bus stopped again at 11:39 pm, Raman suddenly punched the driver in the face. The driver tried to block but was still hit. As the driver pulled out his phone to call for help, Raman tried to snatch it away. Both struggled for about four minutes, during which Raman kept punching the driver’s chest. The whole attack was recorded on the bus CCTV.
Even though he was attacked, the driver still continued driving. Raman later went to the back of the bus to rest. But he was not done yet. At 11:48 pm, he walked up to the driver again and confronted him for another two minutes.
Finally, at 11:51 pm, Raman took the emergency hammer from the middle of the bus, smashed a window, and climbed out to escape.
