“Mum, I love you”, 21-year-old Malaysian university student’s final message before fatal fall

A 21-year-old Malaysian student studying at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) tragically fell to his death from his apartment on Wednesday night (Aug 20), reported China Press.

His name was Guo Junhao. Before the incident, he had sent a series of heartbreaking farewell messages to his family members, including a text to his aunt that read: “Mum, I love you.”

Junhao and his younger brother were raised by their grandparents after their parents divorced. Relatives like their uncles and aunt helped to look after them, and Junhao was especially close to his aunt, Ms Guo.

The two would chat on the phone several times every week.

Final calls and texts

Speaking at the wake, Ms Guo shared that Junhao unexpectedly called her around 8.05pm on the night of the tragedy. The call felt unusual to her, but their conversation sounded normal.

They talked about his graduation plans, working in Singapore, and the possibility of going on a holiday in October. Junhao turned down the holiday plan, saying he would be busy with assignments and exams.

But just minutes after hanging up, at 8.41pm, Ms Guo received a text from Junhao: “Mum, I love you.”

Feeling uneasy, she immediately called back, but he did not answer. Four minutes later, another message came:

“Mum, I’m sorry, I love you.”

She said she knew at that moment something was terribly wrong. She quickly called other family members to check on him, but by 9pm, they received the devastating news of his fall.

Said goodbye to loved ones

Junhao had also reached out to his grandparents, his younger brother, and several close relatives that night to say goodbye.

On Instagram, he left a note apologising for disappointing everyone and asking his grandparents not to cry. He also expressed his wish to reunite with his family in the next life.

He even left instructions for his younger brother, asking him to be obedient and telling him how to handle his belongings.

His uncle, Guo Qiangxing, shared that Junhao’s ashes would be placed at the Wong Seng Kong Temple columbarium, so that he could be “reunited with his father”.
