A delivery rider hit an 80-year-old man with his personal mobility aid (PMA) but did not stop and simply rode off.
The elderly man shouted angrily at him. Instead of leaving, the rider turned back and punched the man twice, knocking him to the ground. He was sentenced to six weeks in jail on Monday (August 18).
According to the report, the accused, 52-year-old Mohamad Supuri, pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt. Another charge of committing a rash act that caused injury was taken into consideration during sentencing.
Investigations revealed that on February 10 at around 10 pm, the victim was walking along the pavement near Block 236 Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 when the accused, who was riding a PMA, crashed into him.
The elderly man suffered injuries to his right thigh and right hip. Instead of stopping, the rider sped off.
The victim, in pain, sat on a nearby bench and shouted in anger at the accused. Hearing this, the rider turned back, parked his PMA, and walked over. He then punched the victim’s left cheek, causing him to fall to the ground.
When the victim tried to get up and cried for help, the rider punched him again on the left side of his chest, making him collapse once more. The rider then left the scene on his PMA.
A 21-year-old passerby witnessed the attack, quickly went to the victim’s aid and called the police.
The victim was taken to the hospital but discharged on the same day, as he had no visible injuries. Police later arrested the accused on the same day.
During mitigation, the accused said he suffered from a slipped disc and claimed he could not sleep in prison. He also mentioned that he was scheduled for a third surgery due to his condition and pleaded with the judge for leniency, saying it was already difficult for him to walk.
