A Malaysian man has been in a coma for 20 days after a serious traffic accident involving two cars and a motorcycle along the Seletar Expressway (SLE) on June 25. The victim and his girlfriend were flung off their motorcycle after the crash. He suffered a major head injury and remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The 32-year-old man, Guo Jiahong, was on the way to work with his girlfriend, 37-year-old Lim Yingying, when the accident happened at around 5.15am. The couple had planned to register their marriage next year.
Girlfriend suffers injuries, now stays by his bedside daily
Lim told Shin Min Daily News that she was flung onto the road and slowly got up, only to find her boyfriend unconscious and bleeding from the nose and ears. She gently removed his helmet, hoping he was still breathing.
“I fractured my right hand and am now in a cast. My legs and back also suffered abrasions from the road,” she said.
The couple had been together for seven years. She now visits him in the hospital every day, hoping he will wake up from the coma.
Underwent three surgeries and still in coma
Guo’s younger brother, 31-year-old Guo Jiasheng, said his brother suffered brain injuries and has not regained consciousness since the crash. He has undergone three surgeries so far, two on the brain and one on his fractured right shoulder.
He shared that Guo’s condition briefly improved, and he was moved to a normal ward. But last Wednesday, doctors informed the family that his condition had worsened. He could no longer breathe properly and was found to have fluid buildup in the brain, so he was moved back to the ICU.
Driver arrested for suspected drink driving
The 30-year-old driver who caused the accident was arrested for drink driving and negligent driving.
According to reports, the car he was driving hit another vehicle. Guo, who was riding behind on his motorcycle, could not avoid the crash and collided with the cars, causing both him and his girlfriend to be thrown off the bike.
SCDF confirmed that both victims were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.
Medical bills now close to $90,000
Lim, who is from Penang, said she works at a food factory in Singapore. Her boyfriend had just switched jobs and was supposed to start working with her. He was waiting for his work permit from the Ministry of Manpower.
“That morning, he was sending me to work,” she said.
Guo’s brother added that he has been working in Singapore’s F&B industry since he was 19. Now, the family is stressed as the medical bills have already crossed $80,000. Although they’ve paid about $30,000, the remaining amount is still a heavy burden for them.
