Police Officer Hospitalized After Motorcycle Accident on PIE, Causes Major Jam

PIE Gridlock After Police Motorcycle Self-Skids, Investigations Underway

A 25-year-old police officer was taken to the hospital after being involved in a motorcycle accident on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). The incident, which happened on Tuesday, July 8, at around 7:50 PM, caused significant traffic delays for motorists heading towards Changi.

Footage captured by a dashcam from a passing car, later shared on Telegram, showed the police motorcycle lying on its side in the middle of the expressway. There appeared to be some scattered debris from the vehicle on the road behind it, indicating the severity of the crash.

Another video, recorded from a nearby flat on Tuesday night, showed several police vehicles and ambulances at the scene, along with an Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) Recovery vehicle.

The accident led to the police having to close off the far-right lane of the expressway. Additionally, two other lanes on the left side seemed to be blocked off, forcing drivers travelling toward Changi to squeeze into just a single lane. As one might expect, this caused quite a bit of traffic congestion.

A netizen on Telegram mentioned that it took about an hour for the jam to clear up, highlighting the disruption it caused during what could have been a busy evening commute.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) also kept the public updated through their traffic news account on X (formerly Twitter).

At 7:58 PM, they first reported an accident on the PIE in the direction of Changi and advised drivers to stay away from lane 1. A few minutes later, they updated the location to be after Kim Keat Link and recommended avoiding both lanes 1 and 3.

About 15 minutes after their initial post, at 8:13 PM, the LTA announced that the accident had caused congestion stretching back to Toa Payoh Lorong 1. The situation worsened further, as 23 minutes later, motorists were advised to avoid lanes 1, 2, and 3, which meant three out of the five lanes on the expressway were affected.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed they were alerted to the accident around 7:50 PM on July 8.

The crash, which involved a police motorcycle, occurred along the PIE heading towards Changi. The SPF stated that the motorcycle was believed to have self-skidded.

The rider, a 25-year-old male police officer, was conscious when he was taken to the hospital for treatment. The police are currently looking into the incident, with investigations still ongoing to determine the full circumstances of what happened.
