The upcoming General Election 2025 in Singapore has set the stage for a compelling electoral battle in the evolving landscape of Punggol, now recognised as a significant election hot spot.
The strategic move of Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong to lead the People’s Action Party (PAP) against senior counsel Harpreet Singh from the Workers’ Party (WP) in the new Punggol GRC has captured the attention of voters and political observers alike.
In a surprising turn of events, Mr. Gan, who also serves as the Minister for Trade and Industry, was confirmed as the anchor minister of the PAP team in Punggol, alongside distinguished members Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Ms. Sun Xueling, and Yeo Wan Ling from the National Trades Union Congress.
This unexpected shift in the candidate lineup, including the relocation of Manpower Minister Tan See Leng to Chua Chu Kang GRC, has added an element of unpredictability to the electoral dynamics of the region.
The WP’s Punggol slate, led by Harpreet Singh and comprising new faces Alexis Dang, Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar, and Jackson Au, has strategically diverted key members to Punggol and Tampines, deviating from anticipated team placements.
WP chief Pritam Singh’s decision to forgo fielding a team in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC was accompanied by a statement seeking residents’ understanding, emphasising the party’s focused electoral strategy.
The significance of Punggol as an election battleground is underscored by its demographic profile, with over half of its 120,000+ voters aged between 21 and 45, dominated by millennial and Gen Z demographics. The area’s voting patterns, as evidenced by WP’s performance in Punggol West SMC in the 2020 General Election, highlight the evolving political dynamics and the appeal of alternative voices in the region.
Amid spirited campaign efforts, both the PAP and WP candidates have articulated their visions for Punggol’s future, focusing on issues such as job creation, infrastructure development, affordability, and participatory politics.
The electorate’s role in shaping the trajectory of Punggol GRC, a newly formed constituency combining voters from Pasir-Ris-Punggol GRC and Punggol West SMC, remains pivotal in determining the electoral outcome.
