Tomorrow (April 8), our Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will go to Parliament to give a ministerial statement about the recent tariffs from the US side. These tariffs might affect Singapore’s economy, so he going to explain what’s happening and how it will impact us.
So what’s the issue?
In case you haven’t heard hor, the US recently decided to suka suka impose tariffs (aka extra tax) on certain imports, which made other countries like China not happy. Singapore also kena. But lucky for us, we got the “baseline” 10% tariff, which is lower than what other ASEAN countries kena.
Last week, in a video, PM and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said the new US tariffs not only affect the global economy, but also shake the entire international system. He then told Singaporeans that we must be prepared to face the challenges ahead.
In his ministerial, PM Lawrence Wong will explain what this means for us, and what the government plans to do about it.
But wait that’s is not all.
This Parliament sitting also got other hot topics on the table:
Drug laws – Presumption under the Misuse of Drugs Act
Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam will explain about the “presumption” in drug laws – basically, if kena catch with certain amount of drugs, you’re presumed to be trafficking unless you can prove otherwise.
He’s going to talk about why this law is still needed.
Chocolate Finance case
Some MPs not happy about how Chocolate Finance suddenly stopped instant fund withdrawals. They want to know how MAS is handling the situation, and whether these fintech companies are being transparent enough with customers.
Bus passenger safety
After one 80-year-old man tragically passed away after falling on a bus, MPs are asking for more details on bus-related deaths over the last 10 years and what causes them.
HDB flats leaking water
Recent rainy weather got some people complaining about water leaking in their HDB flats. MPs want to know how common this is, how fast HDB is responding, and how they detect and fix such seepage problems.
Stay tuned!
