The Prime Minister of Thailand, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.
What Happened?
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred today (28 March) at 12:50 PM local time. The epicentre was located 16 kilometres northwest of Sagaing city, with a shallow depth of only 10 kilometres, making it a shallow and highly destructive earthquake.

Impact of the Earthquake
The earthquake was so powerful that tremors were felt across northern Thailand and the capital city of Bangkok. Large crowds of Bangkok residents fled into the streets in panic, while some rail and Skytrain services were temporarily suspended.
