Filmgarde Cineplexes Bids Farewell to Cinema Industry

Filmgarde Cineplexes' Strategic Exit from Cinema Business

Filmgarde Cineplexes, a well-known cinema operator in Singapore, recently made the difficult decision to exit the cinema industry after closing its final outlet located at Leisure Park Kallang.

In a heartfelt announcement posted on social media, the company expressed its gratitude to loyal patrons, stating, “It has been a wonderful 18 years and it is finally time for us to dim the lights. Thank you for having been part of our cinematic journey. We will see you again.”

The closure of its last remaining venue marked the end of a significant chapter for Filmgarde, which had previously operated three cinemas. The closure of the outlets at Bugis+ and Century Square earlier in 2022 had already hinted at the challenges the company was facing.

Despite these setbacks, Filmgarde remained committed to providing an alternative moviegoing experience, particularly by showcasing independent and lesser-known Asian films alongside mainstream blockbusters.

Reflecting on its journey, the company acknowledged the support it had received from the local film community and its dedication to promoting Singaporean films. In its post, Filmgarde expressed appreciation for the local filmmakers’ commitment to their craft and the privilege it had in showcasing captivating local films exclusively at its theatres.

While Filmgarde bids farewell to its cinema business for now, it hinted at a potential comeback, indicating, “We have dimmed our screens for now so that we may embark on a new chapter of development and adventure, with film and culture still rooted firmly at the centre of our personal mission.” The message resonated with a sense of optimism for the future and a promise of a potential return to the industry.

The closure of Filmgarde Cineplexes adds to a series of challenges faced by cinemas in Singapore, with other major players such as Cathay Cineplexes and Shaw Theatres also experiencing closures. These closures highlight the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the cinema industry and the evolving preferences of audiences, raising questions about the sustainability of traditional cinema-going experiences in the face of increasing competition from streaming services.
