Workers’ Party Sets Sights on Eastern Evolution in GE2025

Workers' Party Strategizes Eastern Expansion for Upcoming GE2025

The Workers’ Party (WP) is eyeing new electoral battlegrounds in Singapore’s upcoming General Election (GE) as part of a strategic “eastern expansion.”

Reportedly, party insiders and analysts have revealed that the WP is considering contesting the newly created Punggol GRC as well as constituencies in the longstanding strongholds of Tampines. The party’s potential expansion into these areas is based on a concerted effort to consolidate its presence in the eastern and northeastern regions of Singapore.

According to a party source familiar with operations, the WP is poised to include several prominent figures in its electoral slate for the newly formed Punggol GRC. This includes former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Yee Jenn Jong, a three-time GE candidate, as well as Ms. Frieda Chan, a previous WP candidate. The inclusion of these individuals signifies the party’s commitment to establishing a strong presence in the Punggol area.

Additionally, WP’s electoral expansion strategy is rooted in a “contiguous strategy”, as noted by Dr Mustafa Izzuddin from the Solaris Strategies consultancy. This strategy entails spreading out from the party’s long-standing Aljunied-Hougang stronghold and targeting contiguous constituencies. Analysts believe that Punggol is anticipated to be a crucial battleground for the WP in the upcoming GE, similar to the closely fought contest in Sengkang during the previous election.

Regarding the Tampines GRC, which has been on the WP’s radar for years, the party is now seriously considering contesting there due to recent shifts in electoral boundaries. Political analyst Loke Hoe Yeong suggests that it is “very likely” for the WP to field candidates in Tampines GRC given these changes. This would set the stage for a potential four-way fight with other opposition parties staking their claims in the area.

Furthermore, the WP’s move to expand strategically in the east and northeast regions aligns with the party’s historical electoral strategy. The WP has traditionally held strong positions in these areas and has been steadily consolidating its presence since the early nineties. The party’s success in Aljunied-Hougang and the recent win in Sengkang GRC have fueled the ambition to further expand its reach in these regions.

In terms of candidate recruitment, the WP is gearing up for a potentially larger slate of candidates compared to previous elections. The party has been actively conducting walkabouts across various constituencies and is focused on recruiting high-quality individuals to represent them in the upcoming GE.

Analysts and experts in the political arena foresee an intense electoral battle in the eastern and northeastern constituencies come GE2025. The potential expansion of the WP into new electoral battlegrounds in Punggol and Tampines reflects the party’s strategic positioning and its effort to strengthen its foothold in Singapore’s political landscape.
