51-year-old Singaporean motorcyclist dies in Malaysia after accident involving car and MPV

A 51-year-old Singaporean motorcyclist died in Malaysia after a suspected overtaking attempt led to a chain collision on Sunday (Nov 16). The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 pm on Jalan Batu Pahat-Mersing.

The crash involved a motorcycle, a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) and a car. According to Shin Min Daily News, the victim has been identified as 51-year-old Kelvin Tan Ming Wai.

According to Malaysian police, the Singaporean motorcyclist was travelling towards Kluang when he attempted to overtake the MPV from the left. During the manoeuvre, the motorcycle suddenly lost control and veered into the opposite lane, crashing head-on into an oncoming car.

The impact caused the car to lose control and swerve into the opposite lane, where it collided with the MPV.

Photos from the scene showed the motorcycle severely damaged, with debris scattered across the road. The car’s front section was crushed, the driver’s door was dented, and the windscreen was completely shattered. Many members of the public gathered at the location, with some offering assistance.

The rider was flung from the motorcycle and landed nearby. Members of the public covered him with a black cloth and shielded the body with an umbrella. The driver of the car was seen sitting inside the vehicle, wiping his head with a tissue.

Kluang District Police Chief Bahrin Mohd Noh confirmed that the rider died at the scene due to severe injuries. The 43-year-old Malaysian male driver of the car suffered injuries to his face, chest and leg and is receiving treatment at Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Kluang Hospital, while the other 43-year-old MPV driver was not injured.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death through negligent driving.

In their statement, the Kluang police advised road users to always be careful and considerate of others on the road to avoid accidents. They also urged anyone with information to contact the police and assist with investigations.
