The incident, which happened on November 9, was caught on camera and uploaded to TikTok. The video quickly spread across social media, but did not reveal the exact location of the outlet. ZUS Coffee also did not mention which branch it was in their statement released on November 10.

The video was first uploaded by a TikTok user under the handle @MI, who captioned it: “A customer said the coffee was made too slowly, then tried to reason with the staff, but she (the staff) told the customer to leave.”

In the clip, the staff member can be heard repeatedly shouting in Mandarin: “Get out! Get out! Get out!”

The woman shouted back, “Why should I get out? I’m buying coffee here, why should I get out?”

The situation quickly escalated. The woman poured her coffee onto the counter, splashing the staff. The staff member then threw the cup back at her. The woman became even angrier, cursed loudly, and picked up another cup to hurl at the staff.

It is not known whether the staff was injured.

The video has since triggered heated discussion online. Many netizens were furious at the woman’s behaviour and called on ZUS Coffee to protect its frontline employees.

Several commenters said the worker was just doing her job and should not be treated this way. Some even warned they would boycott the brand if the company took action against the employee.

Comments included: “Hope the company stands by the employee, she was just defending herself,” “If the employee takes the blame, I’ll never buy ZUS again,” and “People in the service industry have dignity too, they shouldn’t be treated this way.”

ZUS Coffee responds: does not condone aggressive behaviour

In a Facebook statement, ZUS Coffee said it had contacted those involved and was investigating the incident, while expressing support for the affected employee.

“Working in retail isn’t always easy, and things should never have escalated the way they did. At the end of the day, we’re all only humans doing our best,” the company said.

ZUS Coffee also urged the public to respect the staff’s privacy and not to spread the video or false information. The company added that the employee is still recovering and asked for understanding from the public.

It then ended its statement saying: “At ZUS, we do not tolerate any disrespectful attitude and behaviour towards our communities and we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for everyone.”
