Women paid $3,000 for “premium” matchmaking, end up with unsuitable or still-married matches

One woman spent over $3,600 to buy a so-called “premium” matchmaking package, hoping to be introduced to better quality matches. But in the end, the man she was paired with hadn’t even completed his divorce yet. Afraid of being treated like a “third party,” she had no choice but to stop seeing him.

Earlier this month, Shin Min Daily News reported another case where a woman spent nearly $1,000 on a LoveStruck matchmaking package. She complained that the matches were unsuitable, and some were even “old members.” When she asked for a refund, the agency refused. After the report came out, more customers stepped forward with their own unhappy experiences.

Ms Qi, 51, shared that she first saw LoveStruck’s advertisement on Instagram in March last year.

“At that time, I spent about $3,600 for a six-month premium package. The staff said the matches would be of higher social status,” she said.

The staff also tried to upsell her by recommending a photography service, claiming professional photos would boost her chances of success. She ended up paying nearly $300 and was told she had to fork out extra money for photo editing, costing $60 to $90 for each photo.

“I told the photographer I did not need any editing, just give me the original photos, but they refused. I paid but did not get the photos,” Ms Qi said.

Later, a male staff member recommended a 55-year-old man to her, saying he was already divorced. She agreed to meet him, and after the first date, she thought he was quite suitable.

“On our second date, he started talking about his wife, and that was when I realised they were still living together. I was very shocked that he was not officially divorced. I could only stop seeing him because I do not want to be a ‘third party’.”

When she confronted the staff, they denied that the man was still married. The matter was then left hanging.

“They never introduced me to anyone else after that, yet they still asked me to renew my package. I ignored them. I felt I had been cheated.”

63-year-old woman matched with man in his 80s

Another customer, Ms Zhang, 63, who is self-employed, also shared her experience. She said the agency actually matched her with a man in his 80s, who was more than 10 years older than her preferred range.

She bought a one-year premium package in 2022, costing about $3,199.

“The staff once said there was a man in his 60s who was doing investment business in China. I thought that was quite suitable, since I am also in business,” she said.

But after one or two months, the staff did not arrange any meeting. They claimed the man had gone overseas. Instead, the app began recommending men in their 80s.

“I told them I did not want someone too old, but they kept sending me unsuitable matches.”

Ms Zhang said she asked for a refund, but the staff refused.

LoveStruck previously told Shin Min Daily News that, according to their contract, customers must follow the staff’s judgment and the company’s matching formula, instead of insisting on their own personal standards. But as of now, the agency has not responded directly to the feedback from these customers.
