NUS student thought she saw pinhole camera in toilet, but school says it was just a screw and no suspicious device found

A female student at the National University of Singapore (NUS) got a huge scare when she thought she spotted a hidden pinhole camera in the toilet at the school library. She immediately called the police, but investigations later showed it was actually just a screw.

The incident happened on September 2. The student shared on Xiaohongshu that at around 7.50 pm, she noticed something shiny on the cubicle wall. “I leaned closer and saw a small hole with what looked like a camera inside,” she wrote.

She also claimed that the hole had flashed once, and when she went back to check after taking a photo, the flash had already disappeared. This made her suspect that “someone was monitoring in real time.”

Shocked, she quickly covered the hole with tissue paper and video-called her friend. About 40 minutes later, at 8.34 pm, she made a police report.

When the police arrived, the camera was believed to have already been removed, leaving only a small white pin in the hole. CCTV footage was also checked immediately.

Investigation reveals it was a screw

NUS later clarified in response to Shin Min Daily News that campus security had investigated the case. “Campus security conducted checks but did not find any cameras or suspicious objects in the toilet concerned or in other toilets,” said the university.

NUS explained further that “the shiny object the student saw was actually a screw used to fix the toilet paper holder between cubicles, and not a hidden device.” The hole has since been repaired.

The university added, “The investigation showed that from the time the reporting student left until our security officers arrived, only one female student had entered the toilet. She stayed inside only briefly and could not have removed or tampered with any hidden device.”
