A 61-year-old man was recently found dead in his Sembawang flat after neighbours called the police about a bad smell coming from the unit. The police have said that, based on their first look, they don’t believe any foul play was involved.
The sad discovery was made on a Thursday afternoon at Block 363C Sembawang Crescent, where reporters went to the scene, could smell a strong odour from the corridor outside the flat, and they could see what looked like blood on the floor inside.
A neighbour, Mr. Bai, 53, said the police arrived around 2 pm and found the man lying on the floor. Another neighbour, a 29-year-old housewife named Ms. Wu, was the one who called the police. She said that because the flat door was locked, the police had to look through the window. That’s when they saw the man had collapsed inside.
Mr. Bai mentioned that he first noticed the strange smell over the weekend. At first, he thought it was just some food, but the smell didn’t go away. He also felt uneasy because the lights in the man’s flat had been on for several days in a row. After talking with other neighbours, they decided it was best to call the police to check on him.
Mr. Bai described the man as a friendly person who had only moved in a few months ago. He was believed to be a security guard who lived alone. The man got along well with the children in the neighbourhood. Police left the scene around 6 pm after they had finished their investigations.
In a statement, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that they received a call for help around 2:10 pm on September 4. They found a 61-year-old man who was not responsive at the Sembawang flat. A paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said he was dead at the scene.
Police are continuing to look into the issue.
