A terrible tragedy happened in Bukit Merah on Wednesday, August 13.
A fire broke out in an HDB flat, and sadly, two people passed away. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was called to the scene at Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah at about 4pm.
When the firefighters got there, the living room and bedroom of a fourth-floor apartment were on fire. The SCDF used a water jet to quickly put out the fire.
Here’s what we know about the people affected:
- Two people were found in the flat: During the firefighting efforts, two people were found unresponsive inside the kitchen. They were rushed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Police later confirmed that a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, who were both unconscious, died at the hospital.
- Two others from nearby flats: Two other people from the neighbouring units were also taken to SGH. One of them had felt unwell, and the other had breathed in some smoke.
As a safety measure, the police and SCDF worked together to evacuate about 60 people from the affected block.
The police have said that based on their early investigations, they don’t suspect any foul play. The SCDF is still looking into what caused the fire to start in the first place. Investigations by both the police and SCDF are still ongoing.
