Mainland Chinese singer Pu Xiang, who joined Jay Chou’s “Strongest Team on Earth” during the 2016 season of the talent show “Sing! China” (also known as “The Voice of China”), has died suddenly from an acute myocardial infarction in the early hours of August 8.
He was 35. The news was confirmed with grief by several of his friends. His funeral was held on August 10 in his hometown of Xinjiang. The announcement shocked many fans.
Born in Xinjiang in 1990, Pu Xiang was a talented band vocalist and guitarist. He was once the guitarist for singer Parhat Halik’s “Sour Milk Band”. On the “Sing! China” stage, he moved judges and audiences with a heartfelt and soulful rendition of “Leave Sadness to Myself”.
Judge Wang Feng praised his performance at the time, saying it had “power that flows gently from within, and is very comfortable to listen to”.
A lifelong fan of Jay Chou, Pu Xiang joined Jay’s team during the competition and made it into the top five. That same year, he even appeared as a guest performer at Jay Chou’s concert.
Although he had not been active in mainstream media in recent years, Pu Xiang continued to be involved in music, performing regularly in pubs across Xinjiang. His distinctive voice touched many hearts and helped him connect with fellow music lovers.
Following the news of his death, one friend told mainland media outlet Jimu News that Pu Xiang had been an extremely cheerful person and a true “musical genius”, expressing deep shock and sorrow at his sudden passing.
Another friend shared in grief that they had just spoken to Pu Xiang a week earlier and never imagined they would part so soon. He travelled specially to Xinjiang to attend Pu Xiang’s funeral and bid him farewell for the last time.
