Glass Chandelier Collapses at Putien Northpoint Restaurant During Lunch Rush, One Diner Injured

Diner Hospitalized After Glass Chandelier Falls at Putien Restaurant in Yishun

Imagine the scene: a busy lunch hour, and out of nowhere, a massive glass chandelier collapses.

That’s exactly what went down at the Putien restaurant in Northpoint City, Yishun, on July 31. The wires holding the chandelier up just gave way, causing the whole thing to slump and sending glass rods shattering all over the floor.

A Mothership reader who happened to be at the mall mentioned hearing a woman screaming and some really loud, crashing noises. This went on for more than five minutes, which sounds pretty terrifying.

After the collapse, it was all hands on deck. Staff from the restaurant, including chefs still in their uniforms, and even some diners, all worked together to help bring the collapsed chandelier down safely. A video from the scene shows a chef climbing onto a table to disconnect the chandelier from its wires while glass rods were still falling around him. The clip also shows a woman nearby who was sobbing, though it’s unclear if an injury had occurred or if she was just very shaken up by the chaos.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was called in to help. One person ended up being taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for medical attention.

A spokesperson from Putien expressed “deep sorrow” about what happened. He also confirmed that one diner was indeed injured, but that the person received medical attention at a hospital and has since been able to go back home. As a precaution, the restaurant will be doing extra safety checks across all its outlets.
