Man uses SG60 vouchers to buy Pokémon cards instead of daily essentials, calls it best return

A man on Instagram has gone viral for showing how he did not spend his SG60 vouchers like a typical Singaporean uncle or auntie.

In a cheeky Instagram Reel posted by user @tako_boiii on July 28, the man starts off by posing in front of supermarket aisles stocked with daily essentials such as vegetables, cooking oil, and body wash. But instead of reaching for them, he waves his finger in disapproval.

He even does the same in front of a durian stall.

Clearly, he had zero interest in spending his vouchers on essential items.

The next frame? He walks straight into a shop with a sign saying “CDC vouchers accepted here” and happily picks out a few packets of Pokémon cards. The final overlay text reads just one word: “DEGEN!!”

The video has racked up more than 309,000 views, more than 13,000 shares and close to 8000 likes at the time of writing.

What are SG60 vouchers?

For those who didn’t know, the SG60 vouchers are one-off vouchers given to Singaporeans as part of Singapore’s 60th National Day celebrations. They are part of a broader SG60 Package announced at Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

Singaporean seniors aged 60 and above can claim $800 worth of SG60 vouchers, while adults aged between 21 and 59 are given $600 worth of the same vouchers. These vouchers can be used at all businesses that accept CDC vouchers and are valid till December 31, 2026.

The SG60 vouchers are part of the government’s effort to help support Singaporeans in defraying cost-of-living pressures, and at the same time, support local businesses.

But apparently for some, daily expenses = shiny Pokémon booster packs.

Cost of living? What cost of living?

Let’s be real, if we’re really in a cost-of-living crisis hor, should people really be using their government vouchers to “catch ’em all”?

Groceries? Not important. Durian? Can resist lah? But Pokémon cards, MUST GET.

This video sums up a very Singaporean truth: when Singaporeans get free money, forget about being practical. Some people will still find a way to YOLO it on the most unexpected things.
