Bukit Panjang LRT Line to Close Two Sundays for Critical Signalling System Testing

Commuters Advised on Bukit Panjang LRT Sunday Closures for Upgrade Works

The Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) line will be fully closed on August 31 and September 21, both Sundays. These closures are needed to test a new signalling system, which is part of a bigger plan to make the LRT better.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT Trains, which run the LRT, said the new system will help them better control train speeds, which will allow commuters to enjoy smoother and more reliable rides. This means your journeys should become more comfortable and dependable.

They need to close the whole line to provide a longer period for continuous testing of the new signalling system, simulating actual operating conditions. This helps them make sure the new system works perfectly with the updated trains already in use.

A special LRT Shuttle B bus service will be available that come every 5 to 15 minutes, that comes with the usual bus fare.

This new signalling system has been worked on since 2022. It’s a modern “communications-based train control” system, similar to what big MRT lines use.

As part of these upgrades, 14 out of 19 new third-generation trains are already running. Also, 11 out of 13 of the older second-generation trains have been updated and are back in service. The rest of the new trains and updated older trains, along with all the new signalling work, should be ready by the end of 2025.

They are improving the control centre (where staff manage the trains) and replacing power rails. This is expected to finish by the end of 2026. However, the entire power supply system for the LRT has also been fully upgraded to handle more power and has better monitoring systems.

The LTA will also start upgrading the lifts at all Bukit Panjang LRT stations. This work begins on August 11 and should be done by March 2027. All the old lifts, which have been there since the LRT first started, will be replaced with new ones.

The new lifts will be more friendly for people using wheelchairs. They will have sloped floor signs that are easier to see, mirrors on the back walls, and control panels on the side. The buttons will be bigger and light up, making them easier to spot. They will also use less energy.

More information about the lift upgrade times, other ways to travel, and any new updates are on posters and signs at all Bukit Panjang LRT stations.

The Bukit Panjang LRT line is 8km long and connects homes in Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang to the North-South and Downtown MRT lines.
