Singaporean content creator Mayiduo recently opened up about an awkward encounter that left him questioning the status gap between artistes and influencers in the local entertainment scene.
He said that during a Mediacorp project, he tried to shake hands with a veteran actor, but was ignored completely, as if he wasn’t even there.
“In Singapore, there’s a difference between artistes and influencers. Artistes got certain identity. It’s like the actors are (up here), but influencers are (down here).”
Kena ignored not once, but twice
Speaking on a Malaysian podcast dissy.official, the content creator turned first-time director said the first incident happened when he met the veteran star at the opening of another actor’s restaurant.
“Out of courtesy, I said hello and extended my hand for a handshake,” he recalled.
“The person just looked at my hand, smiled… and walked away.”
At first, he gave the benefit of the doubt; he thought to himself that maybe the actor didn’t know who he was, or maybe he just didn’t like shaking hands.
But a second encounter at Mediacorp sealed it.
“I still said hi to him again, introduced myself, and extended my hand. Same thing happened, I got ignored again.”
That’s when Mayiduo realised it probably wasn’t an accident.
Who was it?
In the podcast, Mayiduo mentioned the veteran actor’s name, but the video bleeped it out. Still, netizens were quick to sleuth.
They noticed that the name was made up of two words, and soon enough, names like Wang Lei and Guo Liang started appearing in the comments.
Of course, nothing’s confirmed, and Mayiduo never said anything bad about the person. In fact, he was careful not to assume bad intent.
But to purposely not shake someone’s hand when they initiate it, that’s quite rude sia.
