Graceson Ang, the former inmate who appeared in CNA’s Inside Maximum Security documentary in 2022, is in trouble with the law again.
Now 40 years old, the Singaporean has been slapped with fresh charges and is currently in remand.
On Thursday (Jul 24), Ang appeared in court via video link, dressed in a white shirt and sitting against a white background. He kept his head down and didn’t say much during the session.
Here’s what he’s being accused of:
-
In March 2023, Ang allegedly left Singapore for Malaysia through Woodlands Checkpoint without presenting his passport.
-
In April 2024, he reportedly claimed he had lost his passport when applying for a new one. However, that statement was allegedly false.
-
He’s also accused of importing stun gun devices, specifically mini LED flashlight stun guns, through a parcel on March 7, 2023.
At the time of the stun gun import, Ang was actually on remission for earlier offences. His remission order runs from November 2022 to January 2025.
The case involves multiple agencies, including the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Singapore Customs, and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). The prosecutor has asked for another two weeks to complete the investigations. Ang’s lawyer, Mr Anil Singh Sandhu, said he’ll be meeting him soon.
If convicted of leaving Singapore without presenting a passport, Ang could be jailed for up to six months, fined up to S$1,000, or both.
For making a false statement in his passport application, he could be jailed for up to 10 years, fined up to S$10,000, or both.
For importing stun guns, a first-time offender can be jailed for up to two years, fined up to S$100,000 or three times the value of the goods, or both. If it is a repeat offence, he faces up to three years’ jail, a fine of up to S$200,000 or four times the value of the goods, or both.
Ang was first charged with these new offences last month.
In CNA’s Inside Maximum Security, Ang opened up about his background, his fears that his wife might leave him, and his worries about his daughter. But now, it looks like his road to turning over a new leaf may have hit a major bump.
