60-year-old woman scammed by sweet-talking young livestreamer, loses nearly RM10,000

A 60-year-old woman from Malaysia was scammed of nearly RM 10,000 (around SGD 2,900) after falling for a sweet-talking 20-year-old livestreamer, reported Shin Min Daily News.

It all started when Madam Chow commented on a young male livestreamer’s video, praising his singing on a short video platform. The livestreamer then slid into her DMs, and the two continued chatting on another messaging app. With words like “I love you,” he slowly won her heart.

Not long after, the man said he wanted to send her a “mystery gift.” But he claimed she needed to pay some fees first. He instructed her to buy top-up prepaid cards from a convenience store and send him the code. Trusting him, she sent RM 3,000 worth of prepaid credits.

Then came another twist. He then told her the gift got “stuck at customs” because it allegedly contained cash. He told her that she needed to pay another RM 10,000 to release the parcel or they would both get into legal trouble. He even warned that if she didn’t act fast, they would end up as “prison lovers.”

Panicked, Madam Chow went to the bank to withdraw money from her fixed deposit. Thankfully, a sharp-eyed bank staff member noticed something was off and said they would only release the funds after speaking to her son. She dropped the withdrawal.

But the scammer kept pressuring her, and she was so afraid of going to jail that she borrowed RM 6,000 from a friend. She bought more prepaid cards and sent them to him, only then did she finally realise she had been scammed.
