In a move to steer Singapore forward amidst challenging and turbulent times, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced a new Cabinet comprising a core team of senior leaders and the appointment of two new, younger ministers.
Prime Minister Wong emphasised the robust nature of the new Cabinet, stating, “With your strong support, I have done my utmost to assemble the strongest team I could for Singapore.”
A key highlight of the new Cabinet includes the elevation of existing ministers and the introduction of fresh faces to crucial positions, signifying a revitalised leadership to navigate the complex global landscape. Prime Minister Wong declared his commitment to forming a formidable team, ensuring the nation’s stability and progress in the face of uncertainty.
The restructured Cabinet comes after PM Wong’s significant electoral victory, where his People’s Action Party secured a resounding mandate. One of the pivotal changes involves the promotion of four existing office-holders, including Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim, Mr. Murali Pillai, Ms. Sun Xueling, and Mr. Baey Yam Keng.
Furthermore, nine new office-holders have been appointed, injecting fresh perspectives and expertise into the government.
PM Wong clarified that economic stability is paramount, necessitating the retention of experienced ministers in key economic ministries. Regarding this, PM Wong asserted, “We are operating in a changed world with rising trade barriers, sharper competition and greater uncertainty, and we need experienced hands at the helm.” Additionally, he underscored his continued role as the head of the Finance Ministry, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring a steadfast economic direction.
The reshuffling also saw the consolidation of responsibilities, with three coordinating ministers appointed to oversee national security, public services, and social policies. Notably, Mr. K. Shanmugam will handle the national security portfolio, Mr. Chan Chun Sing will manage public services and defence, and Mr. Ong Ye Kung will focus on reviewing and updating social policies.
Two new MPs and former public servants, Mr David Neo and Mr Jeffrey Siow, have been appointed as acting ministers.
In a departure from tradition, this Cabinet will feature only one deputy prime minister. PM Wong addressed this unconventional move, stating, “For now, I have a solid team behind me. Gan Kim Yong is my deputy prime minister, and I’ve appointed three coordinating ministers. So that’s four senior leaders in my Cabinet.” PM Wong affirms that his team of capable leaders will provide guidance and mentorship to the new and younger ministers, emphasising a collaborative approach to governance.
Furthermore, PM Wong emphasised the administration’s priorities, which include securing Singapore’s position on the global stage, navigating economic uncertainties, and advancing the nation’s interests abroad. With a focus on technological advancement and sustainable energy, the newly appointed ministers will play pivotal roles in shaping Singapore’s future in a rapidly evolving world.
