The recent announcement by the Elections Department of Singapore has confirmed that Workers’ Party (WP) members Andre Low and Eileen Chong will be taking up the coveted positions of Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) in the upcoming 15th term of Parliament.

This move will increase the total number of WP MPs in Parliament to 12, marking a significant milestone for the opposition party.

In the statement released by the Elections Department on May 19, it was revealed that returning officer Han Kok Juan had officially declared Andre Low and Eileen Chong as the newly elected NCMPs. Mr. Low, aged 34, had previously contested in Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency during the 2025 General Election and garnered an impressive 48.53% of the votes, the highest among opposition candidates who did not emerge victorious.

The WP decided to nominate Ms. Chong, aged 33, to occupy the remaining NCMP seat. Before this appointment, she was part of the WP’s Tampines Group Representation Constituency team, which secured 47.37% of the votes in a closely contested battle against the People’s Action Party (PAP).

The WP reaffirmed its commitment to representing the interests of all Singaporeans, holding the Government accountable, and promoting constructive debates in Parliament. The party expressed its appreciation for the contributions that Mr. Low and Ms. Chong will bring to the parliamentary proceedings.

Expressing their acceptance of the appointments, the WP’s Tampines team informed the Elections Department of their decision to nominate Ms. Chong for the NCMP position after receiving a request from Mr. Han.

The Non-Constituency Members of Parliament scheme, introduced in 1984, ensures that a minimum of 12 opposition MPs are present in Parliament. In light of this, with 10 elected opposition MPs from the 2025 elections, both Andre Low and Eileen Chong were chosen to fill the NCMP positions.

Andre Low, a disputes lawyer turned staff product manager at a global financial technology firm, and Eileen Chong, a former diplomat now working at a Singapore-based charity, represent a new wave of political leadership within the Workers’ Party. Their combined professional backgrounds and dedication to public service make them valuable additions to the parliamentary landscape.

The appointments of Andre Low and Eileen Chong as Non-Constituency MPs reflect the evolving political landscape in Singapore and highlight the diverse talent pool entering the ranks of parliamentary representation.
