Former Mediacorp actor Ian Fang, 35, has been sentenced to 40 months in jail after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences involving a 15-year-old girl. He was convicted of one charge of sexual penetration of a minor under 16 and one charge of obstruction of justice. A third charge, for sexual exploitation of a young person, was taken into consideration.
Ian Fang met the victim, a 15-year-old girl, in April 2024 on Instagram. He knew her age from the start. Despite this, he initiated a sexual relationship and engaged in intercourse with her multiple times between May and July 2024.
Their first sexual encounter happened in a hotel, where the victim was serving a COVID-19 quarantine. They later met at his residence and even had sexual activity in a hospital room. On one occasion, he ejaculated in her mouth and told her to spit it into a cup to avoid leaving traces.
Ian Fang did not use protection during intercourse. The girl later contracted human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, which she had not been exposed to prior to her encounters with Ian Fang.
After the authorities began investigating, Ian Fang messaged the victim asking her to plead with her mother not to proceed with a police report. He also expressed suicidal thoughts in messages, saying things like “I will not survive if I go in.”
The girl suffered severe emotional distress and began experiencing suicidal ideation. She was admitted to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), where she was diagnosed with adjustment disorder.
During sentencing, District Judge Lee Lit Cheng said Ian Fang had actively exploited the victim and used emotional manipulation to discourage her from reporting the crimes. She said the case involved a clear breach of trust.
A gag order initially protected Ian Fang’s identity, but it was lifted at the prosecution’s request. His lawyer objected, saying the lifting could cause further harm to the victim.
Ian Fang, a Singapore permanent resident originally from China, will begin serving his sentence on June 16, 2025.
