Local radio DJ and actor Dennis Chew just proved that age is really just a number.

The 50-year-old YES 933 DJ has officially graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, making him the oldest graduate in his cohort.

Went back to school at 47

Dennis started his diploma in Chinese Media and Communication back in 2020 when he was 47 years old.

He joined the course under the SkillsFuture Work-Study Programme, which allows people to work and study at the same time.

While most of his classmates were in their teens or early 20s, Dennis didn’t let the age gap stop him. He said he felt shy at first, but the younger students were welcoming and friendly.

Not easy, but he pushed through

Balancing school and work wasn’t easy. Dennis had to juggle his studies while still working as a full-time radio DJ and doing media jobs.

He admitted there were times he felt like giving up, especially when there were tests or assignments due and he had to stay up late to finish them after work.

But Dennis said he was determined to complete his studies because he wanted to improve himself and be a better communicator.

Graduation day finally came

After four years, all the hard work paid off.

Dennis wore his graduation gown proudly and attended the ceremony with his classmates. He said it felt surreal but meaningful.

“Many times, especially at my age, I tend to unconsciously think that I know a lot. But after coming to study at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I realised that I am actually very fortunate – because it turns out I don’t know as much as I thought I did. I truly need to continue learning in order to gain more knowledge and skills related to my work,” said Dennis.

Netizens proud and inspired

Many Singaporeans online praised Dennis for his determination and positive attitude. Some even said they feel inspired to pick up new skills or go back to school too.

One netizen commented, “Dennis Chew showing us that lifelong learning is real. Respect!”

So the next time you think you’re “too old” for something, just remember Dennis Chew — 50 years old and just graduated from poly.
