In a recent statement, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing emphasised the critical role that support for labour MPs plays in empowering them to effectively represent and advocate for the workers beyond the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
Mr. Chan highlighted the significance of backing the most capable and united team to ensure a robust representation on the global stage during the upcoming polls. He stressed the importance of having leaders with the strong support of the people to secure favourable outcomes in negotiations that benefit fellow Singaporeans.
Addressing the opposing views expressed by WP leader Mr. Pritam Singh, Mr. Chan underscored the essential work done by PAP labour MPs both within and outside of Parliament. He emphasised the collaborative efforts of NTUC officers and labour MPs in working closely with companies and tripartite partners to enhance the welfare and job prospects of the workers, underscoring the complexities involved in the tripartite system.
Furthermore, Mr. Chan discussed the handling of the Allianz-Income saga in August 2024 and pointed out that PAP MPs had raised concerns and diverse perspectives on the matter, reflecting their commitment to fighting for better jobs and wage growth for the workers. He reiterated that the actions and advocacy of labour MPs in representing worker interests hold substantial value in Parliament and Cabinet discussions.
As the General Election campaign progresses, Mr. Chan urged voters to elect representatives who are not only dedicated to serving their communities at the local and national levels but are also capable of representing Singapore on the global stage.
He urged voters to critically assess proposals put forth by opposition parties, considering their implications on the economy, investment attractiveness, job creation, and overall welfare of the citizens.
Highlighting the significance of supporting labour MPs, Mr. Chan reiterated, “So when they (labour MPs) get strong support, (and) they say something in Parliament and Cabinet, people there will sit up and take them very seriously because they know that they are not speaking as individuals, but… on behalf of workers and unionists.”
