PM Lawrence Wong Urges Citizens to Choose Best Leadership Team for Nation’s Future

Prime Minister Wong Emphasizes the Need for Competent and Capable Leaders to Navigate Turbulent Times

In a press conference held on April 23, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasised the importance of Singaporeans equipping themselves with the best team to navigate the challenges and uncertainties in the current global landscape.

PM Wong highlighted the critical nature of the upcoming election, stating, “More than ever, who Singaporeans select to be their elected government is critical.”

He acknowledged the severity of the challenges faced today, especially in comparison to the last elections held during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

PM Wong expressed concerns about the impact of the changing global environment on Singapore’s economy, with businesses experiencing slowdowns, cutting back on investments, and potential job losses looming.

He addressed the rise in trade barriers internationally, urging Singaporeans to recognise the shifting dynamics globally. Echoing SM Lee’s call, PM Wong emphasised the need for Singaporeans to be proactive in selecting competent leaders, stating, “Under these circumstances, I ask Singaporeans to equip yourselves with the best team to take our nation forward.”

Despite acknowledging that historically Singaporeans tend to support the People’s Action Party (PAP) during challenging times, PM Wong did not take this support for granted. He recognised the increased organisational strength of the opposition and anticipated a tough contest in the upcoming election.

PM Wong stressed the importance of voters choosing candidates based on capabilities, integrity, and character, emphasising the need for Singaporeans to make informed decisions regarding representation in Parliament.

PM Wong signalled his efforts to bring fresh faces into the political arena, aiming to strengthen the governing team. He urged Singaporeans to consider the stakes, not just in terms of tactical voting, but also what the election fundamentally means for their families and the future of the country.

“Choose who you believe are the right individuals that you want to represent you in your constituency and in Parliament in our country,” he said.

“They ought to be individuals who are capable, people with integrity, people of good character, and may Singaporeans choose the best candidates amongst the slate of candidates that we are presenting.”
